The sequel is never as good as the original

A Heartfelt Apology

Before I get into the nitty-gritty, I would like to address the elephant in the room. Yes, after one week of producing the Sunday newsletter, I have already failed to make it to the deadline for its second issue. You can be disappointed, outraged even; this is false advertisement, and you did not sign up to be lied to. I will welcome that onslaught but I must say that the blame should not be placed on me. Last night, I was dutifully writing, prepared to finish this newsletter in time to send it out, but amid my struggle, I succumbed to peer pressure and agreed to play Mario Kart with my roommates Kyra and Ethan (who are letting me write this under the condition that their names and Instagram handles be included).

My last roommate situation was a rollercoaster and roommate interaction often came with behind-your-back whisperings (more accurately characterized as stage whisperings if we’re being technical about the volume at which they spoke) and simply entering your own kitchen could be a hotbed for gossip. That’s all to say, I need to nurture these new roommate relationships even if they are influencing me not to write my super important Sunday newsletter. I could have it a lot worse and I am very grateful I don’t. And, playing Mario Kart ended up being a much needed ego boost after utterly failing to produce the newsletter because I won ALL 4 rounds we played! Ethan and Kyra did not even come close to matching my video game prowess and if anyone indicates otherwise, I will sue them for defamation in small claims court for $25!

Dobrý den, y’all.

That is a customary greeting in Czech with a literal translation of “good morning,” but it is really used throughout the day to mean “hello.” That has been the one Czech phrase I have clung to for survival. Pretty much anything after that is a flustered attempt at communication. I have been scared for weeks to say “thank you” for fear of pronouncing it wrong. I will instead smile and slink off into the street before making a fool of myself. This is very uncharastic of me for someone who usually doles out “thanks” left and right, but at least I’m staying in touch with my roots and keeping up the entitled, asshole American reputation.

Reading Between the Lines

A great many things happened this week that have begun to shape my young life here in Prague. Unfortunately, at this time, I am not at liberty to disclose this information. I write this to enshroud myself in a cloak of mystery, hoping my readers will play a little choose-your-own-adventure game in their heads with me as its central character. I do hope I can write about these developments soon as these experiences are bursting with material that demand my quick wit and lyrical prose to dissect them.

Me being mysterious.

Random Tidbits

  • It rained a lot this week. Not a constant stream but at various intervals throughout the days. When the sun is shining, it is gorgeous here — I just hope it starts to warm up soon!

  • I finished my website this week and applied to two jobs for when I get back to the United States. If there’s one thing that working at the Lombard Swim Club taught me, it’s to be proactive!

  • Kyra and I went to see Snow White. It was my first time in a Prague movie theater!

    • So far the snacks here SUCK I haven’t been able to find a good alternative for

      popcorn :(

  • I sat and did work for the first time in a cafe. I was so productive and it reminded me of the Sidecar Coffee & Bakeshop days of yore in Pittsburgh.

  • My life will now be measured in the before trying chia seed pudding and the after. No further explanation needed.

  • We had a big apartment cleaning day yesterday and our space is now pristine and organized. It is scheduled to be a disheveled mess again by 21:00 tonight (yes, I am using military time now because I have to engage in some assimiliation and maintain a level of annoying smugness that can only come with living in Europe that one time).

The Boy Upstairs

I have a neighbor that is really loud and obnoxious. I have never met him but I have been made aware that his name is Tomáš (pronounced toe-maash). I believe he lives between my bedroom ceiling and the roof. It seems like a cramped space to rent out, but he must be getting it for a great price! Anyway, Tomáš likes to make these scratching noises and then scurry to the other side of my ceiling and back again early in the morning. Sometimes he also likes to do this in the evening and in the middle of the night. I’m not sure what Tomáš is getting up to exactly. Maybe it’s an at-home workout routine, but maybe next time can he opt for the apartment friendly kind?

A flock of birds also likes to land on my roof every morning and squack bloody murder. Their enthusiasm is nauseating and who do they think they are, roosters? The only possible explanation for this madness is that I must be the fairest in all the land if I am attracting critters like Snow White.

This is not Tomáš, this is a pigeon.

Well ta ta for now my friends!

Until next time,

Lily
