Some things this week that I think you should hear about

Originally published on Substack on March 23, 2025

Welcome to my Crib

My first real week living in my new apartment has officially come to a close. When I tell you this living arrangement is infinitely better than my experience before, I wouldn’t be exaggerating. During my TEFL course, I stayed in the spare room of an older woman’s apartment. The room was spacious and I had my own en suite bathroom, but she wasn’t a great communicator and talked to her cat more than she spoke to me.

Now, I have two roommates around my age. I never thought I would take for granted getting to talk to 20-somethings, but after my previous living arrangement and being the youngest in my TEFL course by 7+ years, I may be Benjamin Button reincarnate.

St. Patrick’s Day

I never thought I would say this, but St. Patty’s Day was one of my favorite days of the year – and we're only three months into 2025. Four of us (my roommate, her visiting cousin, one of her friends, and me) spent the night at a few Irish pubs. One of them had the BEST chicken sandwich I think I have EVER eaten. The chicken was tender in a way I haven’t experienced before and the fries were a heap of greasy goodness.

After eating, we headed to another pub called Durty Nelly’s. Apparently, this is a great place for karaoke. We all agreed to sing our hearts out if we could find the perfect song. After a fit of indecision, we came up with a few options. When the host opened the queue, my roommate furiously typed “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I was skeptical at first. With Chappel Roan, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift occupying most of the sound system, I didn’t know how Queen would fare. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

As soon as the opening chords played, I could feel the low hum of restlessness laying dormant. We began to sing and the crowd erupted into song along with us, unleashing a frenetic energy. I think we experienced the thrill of rock stardom without having any musical talent. About midway through the performance, someone turned on the smoke machine, and during the guitar solo right before “So you think you can love me and leave me to die,” a sparkler exploded in a flurry of light at the side of the stage.

When the song ended, I approached a girl who looked like she was videoing during the performance. I asked if she caught any of our time on stage and she said she had. We added each other on Snapchat and she sent me the video later the next day. While you can only catch a glimpse of the four of us on stage, I’m glad I can forever cherish this memory thanks to Gen Z’s unhealthy obsession with documenting anything and everything with our cell phones.

Job Hunting

I applied to five jobs this week and had one interview. The goal is to apply to at least five more this week. My days have started to feel a little aimless, so I am hoping to fill my time more purposefully this week. I would say I am currently fending off the Sunday Scaries by writing this, but all my days are starting to blur together!

Random Tidbits

  • I got my nails done and the nail tech was so lovely to talk to and she did an amazing job with my nails! She said this was an easy design — an EASY design!

  • I have been cooking up a storm! I might start sharing what I’m getting up to in the kitchen.

  • I went on my first run in Prague! I ran along the river and it was gorgeous. I am excited to do that more often when the weather is more consistent.

  • I witnessed the tail end of a stunning sunset from Riegrovy Sady. I will write more about this spot when I experience an entire sunset watch from this classic Prague viewing point.

  • I had dinner on a boat near my apartment. I anticipate that being a consistent occurrence as the weather gets nicer.

Sports Day

Yesterday, one of my roommates invited their friends to play games in one of Prague’s sprawling parks. I felt like a kid again playing capture the flag and badminton like we did in gym class. Standing at the edge of Letna Park on my way home, the city unfolded before me in a smattering of bridges, hillsides, and Monopoly-esque, boxy buildings. Bit by bit, it’s starting to feel like I have a life here.

That’s it for my weekly update!

Until next time,

Lily
